1795 (B-14 "off center bust") Flowing Hair dollar, ANACS XF-45 1795 (B-14 "off center bust") Flowing Hair dollar, ANACS XF-45
Lot Title: 1795 (B-14 "off center bust") Flowing Hair dollar, ANACS XF-45
Description: Two die marriages, B-14 and B-15, of the 1795 Draped Bust silver dollar are known. One features a centered portrait on the obverse, and the other displays Liberty's portrait shifted a bit to the left of center, hence the colloquial name. While your cataloger has never encountered a definitive reason as to why the mint used both iterations, it is significant to note that a similar situation never took place with contemporary smaller silver denominations, all of which always featured a centered draped bust (or "fillet bust", to use the term of earlier authors). It is therefore easy to draw the conclusion that the initial placement of the bust too far to the left was a mistake. At any rate, collecting by "Red Book variety" requires acquisition of both versions.

At hand is a gorgeous, lightly circulated example of B-14. Although it is sensible to assume that only a very few coins in this grade range survive with entirely original surfaces, the present piece displays no flagrant evidence of cleaning or other processing, and the mint luster, particularly on the reverse, is pleasing to the eye. Further enhancing the appeal, a thin veneer of olive-gold splashes across each side, easing into dusky-bronze color at the rims. Adjustment marks are localized to the far right and upper far left obverse rims and do not impede the allure whatsoever. Often, large coins of this vintage have been impacted with marks and rim dings, but there are no such distractions on the present coin, the only blemish being a nearly invisible, thin hairline descending from Liberty's throat. Finally, rounding out this coin's excellent character is the mildly wood grained effect oriented nearly horizontally across the obverse. The effect is not dominant, and merely provides an intriguing canvas against which the coins' true beauty is featured. From the "Zodiac" collection.

1795 (B-5, BB-27) NGC F details/repaired.
Marshmallow Collection. This is a tough call, as the thick, dense oil-slick substance coating the surface can be assumed to be hiding "something", though we cannot see just what. The reverse...
756The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,700.00
1795 (B-1, BB-21) NGC VF details/bent.
Marshmallow Collection. NGC declares the coin "bent", and if true, it apparently has had no impact on the normal wear pattern. The coin is likely a prime candidate for being straightened, if...
758The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$5,750.00
1795 (B-7, BB-18) NGC AU details/repaired.
Marshmallow Collection. Stunning sharpness (for the type) belies underlying problems that may include overall smoothing of the surface, as there appears to be no flowline luster at all to accommodate...

1795 3 Leaves (B-5, BB-27 R.1) NGC AU details/improperly...
NGC's disclaimers are curious in calling attention to an improper cleaning and "obv damage". In fact, the obverse appears to have no more damage than such a large coin would expect to sustain from...

1795 (B-1) Flowing Hair dollar, F-12, plugged
An exceptionally well executed plug of a hole at the top of the obverse is further camouflaged by extensive tooling and repair of the entire coin. Subsequent patination lends a bit of appeal, but...

1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar, ANACS VF-30
A reasonably original appearance dominates this large, early type coin. Although details seem a bit bolder on the reverse, that is partly because B-5 is one of those varieties characterized by...

1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar, NGC XF-45
Faint hints of lilac and battleship-grey overtones enrich this splendidly detailed coin, providing a level of eye appeal seldom found for early dollars. Remarkably free of rim dings or other...

1795 B-1 ANACS F-12 Details, Repaired-Whizzed.
Several disclaimers by ANACS accurately and sufficiently describe the way this Flowing Hair dollar has been processed. A hole through the center entailed considerable effort to repair. It is...

1795 NCS VF Details Repaired.
We had to look at this coin for a little while before we could locate the repair. The repair is under Liberty's chin, but it is very difficult to see. This early date dollar has VF+ details, and is...
