Stunning penny board collection (1857 - 1909-S) of Flying Eagle and Indian cents Stunning penny board collection (1857 - 1909-S) of Flying Eagle and Indian cents
Lot Title: Stunning penny board collection (1857 - 1909-S) of Flying Eagle and Indian cents
Description: (Cataloger's note: this same consignor also have a complete penny-board collection of Lincoln cents in this sale.) Here is the type of lot that is absolutely certain to get the pulse racing for any red-blooded collector of small cents. The Scotsman Auction company is immensely pleased to be able to offer a complete set of Indian Head cents, exactly as collected by our consignor in a vintage penny board. Author David Lange in his recent book, "Coin Collecting Boards of the 1930s and 1940s" attributes this as "L1cAa", and it is the early version with variable sized fonts in the subtitle (From 1856 to 1909). The populated board has been mounted in a more recent frame for safekeeping, and therefore, your cataloger was not able to examine the reverses of these coins, and presumes the reverse of each coin to be in keeping with the quality of its obverse.

The quality of this set is marvelous, as every single coin is an uncleaned and undamaged original piece, with the possible exception of 1878. The 1856 is a replica that has been apparently worn down as a pocket piece, and looks remarkably original and similar to a genuine coin. Obviously, the consignor wished to collect coins only with a full LIBERTY, and not a single coin in this set has less than F-15 details.

There are so many gorgeous coins in this set that it seems unfair to highlight only a few. Your cataloger trusts that the following will suffice: 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862 and 1864 copper-nickel coins are all VF or better, 1864-L (VF-30), 1866 (XF-40), 1867 (XF-45, dark), 1868 (XF-45), 1869 (VF-35), 1870 (VF-25), 1871 (VF-30), 1872 (AU-50), 1876 (XF-40), 1877 (F-15 or better, the "lowest" grade coin in the set), 1878 (VF-20, dark), 1886 (XF-40), 1908-S (VF-20), and 1909-S (VF-25).

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1909-S Indian cent, and a 1922-Plain, weak reverse, both Fine details.

288The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$575.00
Six Uncirculated small cents certified by NGC.

Pair of small cents with UNC details/questionable color.
NGC declares "altered color" for an uncirculated 1868 cent, but the visual impact is that of a decently original MS-63 RB. PCGS designated "questionable color" on the slab of a 1916-D Lincoln,...
