1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, ANACS photo-certified AU-55 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, ANACS photo-certified AU-55
Lot Title: 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, ANACS photo-certified AU-55
Description: Evidently, because this coin could pass as a red-brown UNC from the appearance of either face, someone took the time to file some unknown problem (presumably a rim bump) off the lower obverse and reverse rims and re-apply a beveled appearance. Not referenced in the necessarily abbreviated grade reference is a series of oddly periodic mechanical tooling marks across the reverse. They are extremely shallow, but lend the appearance of a zebra stripe toning pattern. The grade as assigned back in 1984 was no doubt a net grade assessment, though that is not mentioned on the photo certificate.
Low Estimate: $775.00
High Estimate: $950.00

204The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$475.00
1909-S VDB ANACS F-12.
Campania Estate. Details should technically reach the VF level, but ANACS offers only F-12 for this key Lincoln cent. What is most intriguing is that each side displays signs of very advanced...
205The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$525.00
1909-S VDB NGC F-12.
Rich, semi-glossy coffee-brown patina looks utterly gorgeous at the NGC F-12 grade level, and both sides benefit from this perfect level of classic copper oxidation. Wheat lines display precisely the...
206The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$525.00
1909-S VDB ANACS F-15.
Macrame Collection. Frosty coffee-brown patina shows some evidence of wood grain effect under magnification, and though placed only at the Fine level by ANACS, traces of darker tone surround the...
207The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$525.00
1909-S VDB NGC F-15.
JRC Set. Full separation of each line within the two wheat stalks affirms a grade of at least Fine+. Strictly honest wear can take responsibility for the flatness seen throughout, but there are...
208The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$500.00
1909-S VDB NGC F-15.
Macrame Collection. Potential bidders may find that this is really a VF cent hiding in an F-15 holder. Wheat lines show distinct sharpness and the bowtie displays nice relief for the grade, but...
209The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$575.00
1909-S VDB NGC VF-25.
Smooth and chocolate brown, this might prove to be an ideal album coin for the collector pursuing a nicer middle-grade Lincoln set. A tiny dig just beneath "IN" and one carbon fleck on the chin join...
210The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$550.00
1909-S VDB NGC VF-25.
Macrame Collection. Very strong definition (for VF) of the wheat stalks on the reverse would tend to suggest the coin has been undergraded at first glance. The lines show superb separation, and...
211The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$600.00
1909-S VDB NGC VF-30.
Macrame Collection. Marvelous for VF-30, the wheat stalks show precisely the requisite delineation required of the Choice VF grade, with widely separated, clean lines and individually sculpted...
212The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$1,150.00
1909-S VDB NGC UNC details/improperly cleaned.
Disclaimers on "details only" coins can be just as subjective as grade, and in the case of this key Lincoln cent, NGC chose to mention "improperly cleaned", even though one might contend the effects...
213The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$1,450.00
1909-S VDB NGC MS-64 RB.
Many collectors "in the know" are aware that this grade of MS-64 RB is very much in vogue right now for the key to the Lincoln cent series. Look through dealer inventory, and most pieces are usually...
342The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,150.00
1909-S VDB NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Captain Green Collection. Recently sent in for submission by the consignor with expectations of an UNC grade at some numeric level, NGC instead states that this key cent falls into the "AU details"...
343The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$950.00
1909-S VDB NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Captain Green Collection. In the consignor's album for a long time, the mildly cleaned surfaces have begun to recover some more original character, with sienna-brown color that filters down across...
344The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,050.00
1909-S VDB PCGS AU-55.
Perfectly graded with scant evidence of any wear, only a modest shift in color lying atop the highpoints confesses a brief stint in circulation. A solitary contact mark toned over in the obverse...
345The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$2,100.00
1909-S VDB NGC MS-64 RB.
First impressions are important, and in this case it would be easy to see this as a full red key wheat-cent. Deep ruby-orange patina has barely faded toward the brown part of the spectrum, and...
343The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$700.00
1909-S VDB, 1909-S, and a 1931-S, all VF.
New World Estate. Some of the important keys to a nice Lincoln set show up in this trio, and all show absolutely superb, original chocolate-brown patina. Grades for these various cents might be...
344The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$525.00
1909-S VDB XF details, and a 1914-D VG details.
New World Estate. 1909-S VDB has gorgeous XF details and absolutely perfect brown patina. However, the right wheat stalk displays a series of tiny machining marks, with a couple of additional small...
346The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,775.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64RB (green label).
Probably 75% red, the brilliance diminishes only where a modest touch of greyish patina touches the fields and devices here and there. Probably struck from moderately aged dies, Lincoln's portrait...
347The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,000.00
1909-S VDB PCGS MS-64RD.
Blazing flame-red luster simply jumps from the fields, vigorously twisting and turning under a good lamp. Given that the only visible marks are flung into the extreme right field, the MS-64 (RD)...
348The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$4,300.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-65RD.
The dream coin since childhood for many a Lincoln cent collector, 1909-S VDB is also ideal at the dream grade: MS-65 RD. And in this case, there is no doubt that the flaming bright, undiminished...
494The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$600.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS F-15.
DHCH Collection. Pitch-perfect for the F-15 grade, as the wheat stalks show fully delineated, complete lines as well as a complete outline of every kernel. Lincoln's portrait is expectantly flat,...
495The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$625.00
1909-S VDB. VF.
Exceptionally well preserved, the consignor has taken outstanding care of this key Lincoln cent over the course of many years, and surfaces show remarkable freedom from any abrasions or hairlines. ...
496The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$600.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-25.
Exceedingly original with no evidence of having been manipulated in any way, a Lincoln cent like this plays the starring role in many a collector's dreams of completing a set of Lincoln cents. Ideal...
497The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$850.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS XF-40.
Practically immaculate and cloaked in absolutely ideal deep chocolate patina, about the only thing that denies perfection (for the grade) is an ancient pin-scratch, completely toned over, that extends...
498The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. NGC AU-55.
The grade could not be more accurate for a key Lincoln that exhibits practically full luster right through fields, along with mere traces of wear atop well defined motifs. The surfaces display...
499The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,575.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64BN CAC.
Terrific golden-toast patina sheds plenty of luster as light plays over the surfaces and provides a feast for the eyes. CAC sees this as a premium coin, and one look at the pinpoint definition and...
272The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$825.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS Genuine, Cleaning, AU Details.
Decent sharpness lends positive character to this key cent, as does much luster on the reverse. Unfortunately, the PCGS "cleaning" disclaimer fails to reference the more egregious surface issue,...
273The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$725.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-35.
Surfaces are darker than average, especially on the obverse where a low-contrast presentation does little to amplify apparent sharpness. A single raised green dot can be found on Lincoln's shoulder...
274The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$825.00
1909-S VDB. NGC XF-40 BN.
Today's sale offers several 1909-S VDB cents to choose from, but the collector who prefers honestly circulated coins will find much to like here. Perfectly even nut-brown patina shows no spots or...
275The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS AU-55.
Basically uncirculated in terms of walnut-brown luster, with scarcely any wear visible in the fields. Superb, even glossy patina helps disguise any sign of wear, but look carefully and one may locate...
276The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS AU-58.
Small ANACS holder. In slabs, nothing beats the convenience of the old ANACS holders, and it's an especially pleasant day when the encapsulated coin is this nice. Despite a mere two points of wear,...
277The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,550.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS MS-61 BRN.
Small ANACS holder. Full shimmering brown luster leaves no doubt about the mint-state status, and this coin should earn at minimum the same grade from any grading service on any given Sunday. For...
278The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,350.00
1909-S VDB. NGC MS-62 BN.
Bronze-gold color almost seems worthy of an RB designation, though this slab is from a particularly conservative era of NGC grading. To that point, the coin displays considerable luster for MS-62,...
279The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,300.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63RB.
Unusual and interesting appearance derives from an obverse that features honey-gold patina to Lincoln's left, and velvety brown iridescence on the right - a dual-personality coin! The reverse...
280The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,500.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63RB.
Close examination will find some scattered light grey carbon spots, but they aren't visible without a loupe and affect the eye-appeal not at all. PCGS designates "RB" as the color assessment, but...
281The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,650.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64BN CAC.
When does a "brown" designation apply to a coin that is about one-quarter red? Most likely when it is conservatively graded, which appears to be the case here. Copper-tan undertone flickers with the...
282The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,600.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64 BN CAC.
Rather fine luster roams here and there between competing areas of luminescent pecan-gold and royal-blue, with this color scheme equivalently represented on both sides. Under a loupe, the brown...
283The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,900.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS MS-64 RB.
ANACS grading may be gaining ground on competing company standards if the present coin is any indication. Graded MS-64 RB by "America's oldest grading service", that grade appears to be spot-on...
264The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$925.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS VF-25.
Wheat lines proclaim sharp separation, with decent definition of the kernels suggesting the VF grade level. A couple of moderate marks on Lincoln's portrait require mention.
265The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$750.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-35.
Thick chocolate-brown patina piles high on the obverse, while the reverse is nearly a shade lighter, with underlying pecan accents. The grade might best be confirmed with observation of the kernels...
266The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$875.00
1909-S VDB. NGC XF-40.
The ideal grade for many collectors, in XF, Lincoln's portrait retains most major details, this his bowtie particular sharp in this instance, though his hair has lost finer details. Contact marks on...
267The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$750.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS XF-40.
Caramel smooth and slightly glossy, with absolutely perfect brown color throughout. Kernels in both wheat stalks are well defined, as is Lincoln's bowtie. The portrait is affected by several...
268The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS AU-55.
Glossy surfaces offer extremely attractive chocolate-brown color that represents just about the ideal for most collectors that prefer ultimate, original patina. Perhaps this coin was pulled out of...
270The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,300.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS MS-61BN.
Luster is nicer than expected for a deep brown cent in the MS-61 grade range. Softness of detail on the obverse emulates an upper AU grade, but the ANACS grade implies that it is strike deficiency,...
271The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,350.00
1909-S VDB. NGC MS-62 BN.
Aside from a minor contact point in the obverse right field, lack of marks ensures fairly attractive overall appeal, with details that are sharper than average for 1909-S VDB. A fragile layer of...
272The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,300.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-62BN.
MS-63 is all there in the form of an attractive olive-brown UNC, with strong definition, decent luster and unmarked surfaces. The single point downgrade to PCGS MS-62 unquestionably derives from a...
273The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,350.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63RB.
Moderate luster and a strike that provides decent sharpness should normally be cause for strong grade assessment of a key Lincoln cent. That said, PCGS may have downgraded this particular 1909-S VDB...
274The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,500.00
1909-S VDB. NGC MS-63 RB (no line).
A scarcer NGC slab has the back embossed, this being important because it means the surfaces of the enclosed cent have been stable for many years. At a time when a lot of copper coins have been...
275The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,600.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63RD.
Outstanding, original red color emerges from both sides and has not submitted at all to the effects of the passage of time. Only the reverse displays a delicate hint of spearmint-blue toning,...
276The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,550.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64BN.
Low-contrast olive-gold and medium brown compete for space on either side in a somewhat disorganized pattern. By no means is this unattractive, especially given the noticeable underlying mint...
277The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,600.00
1909-S VDB. NGC MS-64 RB.
Reddish glow like burning embers emanates from the obverse, weaving a classic wood grain pattern across Lincoln's portrait. Curious mottling of olive-brown and copper color dominates the reverse and...
278The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,100.00
1909-S VDB. NGC MS-64 RB.
Spectacular and unusually vibrant cyan-magenta iridescence spills out of the obverse fields, with the reverse also showing glittery areas of similar iridescence, the complete effect truly elevating...
279The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$4,500.00
1909-S VDB PCGS MS-65RD (rattler).
Marvelous surface quality exhibits very few contact marks, with one minuscule tick seen just above Lincoln's temple. Sharpness seems even more pronounced than usual, and the luster for sure produces...
236The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,850.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64RB.
The toning pattern demands closer inspection since the woodgrain effect is very strong under magnification, with long, thin golden streaks that meander from upper-right to lower-left across Lincoln's...
237The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,900.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64 RB.
Mostly reddish across 80% of the obverse, the far right field tones down with grey-brown patina, and the reverse is about two-thirds colored in similar grey overtones. Luster is particularly...
238The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$3,000.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-65RB.
The "key" to the Lincoln cent series is surprisingly available in almost any grade, but they are seldom this nice, particularly with a "red-brown" color designation. For that matter, the surfaces...
239The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$3,000.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-65 RB.
Delicate grey-brown and mint-orange patina combine in ideal proportion that leads to the "RB" color designation, providing just enough as-minted appeal without crossing the line into expensive full...
388The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$675.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VG-10.
Wheat lines on the reverse are very close to being fully separated and defined, and despite considerable wear on both sides, this coin is very close to grading fully F-12. Indeed, on some days, this...
389The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$900.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS XF-40.
Suitably graded, with the patina and hints of luster suggestive of slightly better preservation than is implied by XF-40. An irregular, ancient scratch in the obverse lower left field likely...
390The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$950.00
1909-S VDB. NGC XF-40 BN.
The obverse is virtually perfect for the grade, with only a micro-tick or two visible on Lincoln's cheek. The reverse sees a couple of additional smallish contact marks and a few minor old scratches,...
391The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$975.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS XF-45.
Even careful examination with a loupe fails to discover any contact mark of consequence, and this is positively amazing for a small cent with fifteen points of wear. Obverse sharpness actually seems...
392The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. NGC AU-55 BN.
Surfaces display an unusually "metallic" texture that is all the more intriguing with the addition of streaky woodgrain toning and deep blue iridescence layered across high relief areas of Lincoln's...
393The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS AU-58.
There is hardly a circulation mark of note, with only a smattering of tiny nicks and abrasions attesting to the short stay in circulation, with modest wear on Lincoln's features. Surfaces appear to...
394The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,450.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-61BN.
Some oily texture unmistakably affects the surfaces and is at least partially responsible for a faint bluish cast. That said, luster really "pops" for a brown copper coin graded only MS-61, and many...
395The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,300.00
1909-S VDB. ICG MS-63 RB (spot/questionable color).
The obverse possesses a pleasing appearance overall, replete with good color and plenty of mint red luster, while the reverse has an unusual magenta cast that isn't quite ordinary for inaugural...
268The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$800.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS F-15.
Lines in both ears of wheat are 100% complete and sharp, making a case for VF consideration. Both sides display superb, original brown patina, and very few distractions. An outstanding lower grade...
269The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$775.00
1909-S VDB. VF/altered surfaces.
What appears at first glance to be usual wood grain toning has a somewhat odd appearance under closer examination, as if areas had been smoothed with extraordinary care. Still, it is difficult to...
270The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$825.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-30.
As demanded of any grade above "fine", the wheat stalks display strong, fully separated lines, and even the kernels are all individually present, though those on the left are barely delineated as one...
271The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$800.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS VF-30.
Obverse and reverse display the perfect level of detail for the VF-30 grade, and the patina and color are virtually ideal as well. Lincoln's bowtie is sharp and the jacket lapels suitably defined. A...
272The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS XF-45.
Speaking strictly of the coin, which after all is what matters, this key Lincoln cent is about as perfect as it can possibly be for the PCGS grade of XF-45. The color is incredibly attractive for...
307The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,450.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS Genuine.
Genuine-91 indicates "questionable color", yet even though the mixture of mint-red and subtle bluish-brown patina has a slightly greenish-grey iridescent cast, it seems likely that this coin will end...
308The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$800.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS Genuine.
Altered surfaces indicated by the Genuine-94 code is an apt description of the olive-tan appearance, and the streaky nature of the toning on the obverse. To this coin's favor, the surfaces are...
309The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$600.00
1909-S VDB XF detial/environmental damage, and 1914-D F details/paint...
The first two keys to a complete Lincoln cent collection can be won for a single high bid, with a caveat that both coins have issues. 1909-S VDB barely has the details of an XF grade, but Lincoln's...
310The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. NGC XF Details/improperly cleaned.
Considering the level of cleaning that is seen on some Lincoln cents in holders, it is truly a head-scratcher for your cheerful cataloger to describe why this key would be described as "cleaned". It...
311The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$725.00
1909-S VDB. NGC AU Details/rim damage.
For the brown AU level, luster is surprisingly prevalent, and the slightest whisper of mint red freckles the area around Lincoln's bowtie. One of the NGC's finest innovations in recent years has been...
312The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. AU BN.
At arm's length, a very acceptable appearance is given by this key to the Lincoln cent set, as each side is even brown and just slightly glossy. A number of light lines crisscross Lincoln's portrait,...
313The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,100.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS AU-58.
It is said that a pessimist sees the glass as half empty, and an optimist sees the glass as half full. But a numismatist might wonder why the heck anyone would be preoccupied with either the glass or...
314The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,150.00
1909-S VDB. NGC AU-58 BN.
There is no wear to distinguish this from an uncirculated coin, and it is merely the presence of contact marks from keys or other pocket objects that justifies the AU-58 grade. Luster is essentially...
315The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,250.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-61BN.
If ever a key Lincoln cent needed careful, professional conservation, this would be it. Setting distractions aside, this is a remarkably attractive consistently brown coin that displays a whole lot...
316The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$2,300.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64RB.
It is pure joy to review such a marvelous key example to the Lincoln series, and as ironic as it may seem to call MS-64 RB a rather mundane grade for the undisputed King of the series,...
317The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$4,900.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-65RD (green label).
Encapsulation in a PCGS green-label holder gives some assurances to bidders that the color of this key Lincoln cent has remained stable for decades, and that adds to the allure of any precious,...
214The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,500.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-62 RB.
Although both sides are remarkably free from contact marks, as would befit a much higher grade, luster is noticeably subdued for this key Lincoln cent. This is undoubtedly due in part to dry...
215The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$700.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS VG-8.
Heavily worn, yet half the wheat lines on the right stalk are retained. A wholesome, all-natural key representative.
156The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$950.00
1909-S VDB and 1914-D. VG.
Collectors of the Lincoln cent series who lack the two most important keys may appreciate the opportunity to bid on this pairing. 1909-S VDB grades VG-10, and 1914-D grades F-12, and both are...
157The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-30.
Recolored with extraordinary skill, this key Lincoln very nearly has a fully original appearance, as the dominant dark olive-brown color is just a shade off compared to the darker leather-brown tone...
158The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. XF.
An off-color burgundy-rouge appearance derives from an old cleaning that has toned down considerably over time. It seems likely that, provided the proper environment continues to be enjoyed by this...
483The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,000.00
1909-S VDB and 1914-D.
Both primary keys to the regular issue wheat cent series may be obtained with this one lot. The 1909-S VDB possesses XF-40 details, but storage in an improper environment has led to a verdigris...
484The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$900.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS F-12.
Ultra original, with a swath of salmon-olive tone on the right of each side. Nicely free of marks for such a well circulated survivor.
485The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$550.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS VF-20 details, corroded.
The "corroded' disclaimer provided by ANACS is nearly superfluous, as the effect is limited almost exclusively to areas around the reverse rim, and has virtually no bearing on this coin's appearance. ...
486The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,125.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS XF-45.
Very sharply struck and nicely detailed in spite of five points of wear on either side. The obverse features mild wood grain effect in the lower right quadrant, a common phenomenon of early Lincolns....
487The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,750.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63RB.
The original copper color is somewhat layered in olive-drab overtones that tend to mute the luster, but at the same time ensures original quality. Minuscule planchet streaks appear in the left...
488The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,600.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63BN.
Hints of subdued mint red adhere to the rim and edge of the President's portrait and flickers in isolated spots across the reverse, but there is no question that this key date cent is almost entirely...
489The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$2,500.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64RB.
More 'brown' than 'red' with almost all the 'red' being concentrated at the upper right obverse field. As is often the case for this inaugural issue, the strike is quite pleasing, with sharp beard...
490The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$3,600.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS MS-65 RED.
An intricately struck gem that features extensive luster which conjures up rich copper-gold color overall. Speckles of greyish tone are splashed across each side, but consume a mere fraction of the...
530The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$750.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS VF-20 Details, scratched-cleaned.
A lengthy scratch gashes the obverse, stabbing the back of the President's neck. A thorough cleaning has left this coin very bright, but the ANACS details grade seems conservative by about ten...
531The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$875.00
1909-S VDB, "Obverse Struck Thru." ANACS VF-30.
Dense and very original olive-drab patina envelops this key Lincoln cent. Of immediate visual impact is a sizeable void on Lincoln's shoulder that vaguely resembles the little dipper, and an even...
532The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,050.00
1909-S VDB. XF/Lightly Cleaned.
Grapefruit-pink color cannot be construed as original, and unnatural gloss over the highest design elements confirms suspicion of a moderate cleaning. A surprising amount of cartwheel luster is...
533The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,000.00
1909-S VDB. PCI XF-40.
Evidence of a late die state takes the form of die erosion in the date area. An old scratch slices through Victor D. Brenner's initials on the reverse, and your cataloger suggests a grade assessment...
534The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,500.00
1909-S VDB. AU.
Tantalizingly close to mint state, this key Lincoln cent actually retains 90% of its inherent mint luster. A wide swath of bluish-grey patina dominates the right obverse field, and a similar color...
536The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$4,900.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS MS-65 Red.
Exceedingly original and unenhanced color demonstrates the peculiarly orangeish tint exhibited by most truly uncirculated 1909-S VDB cents. The strike lacks the extreme sharpness exhibited by the...
239The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$825.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VG-8.
Seemingly undergraded, as the wheat lines are 100% complete on the reverse, though it should be noted that VDB is peculiarly weak. A rigorously original coin that, despite the overhead cost of...
240The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$950.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS F-15.
Butter smooth surfaces offer slight gloss and supremely appealing, classic brown color. Though moderately worn, a little grunge built up between the letters and in the protected areas emboldens the...
241The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$975.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS F-15.
Moderate wear has somewhat flattened the President's portrait, but the letters are bold, and the wheat ears surprisingly strong for the grade. A shade darker than average, and only typically bag...
242The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$825.00
1909-S VDB VF, obverse scratch.
Although it is a genuine and pretty original coin overall, a noticeable scrape has imparted a few unfortunate thin scratches on Lincoln's portrait, and it is of not so distant origin, as the area...
243The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,100.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS VF-35.
Finely textured woodgrain toning will appeal to many connoisseurs of original Lincoln cents, and this one narrowly misses an "extremely-fine" grade. Perhaps a bit of softness on Lincoln's ear and...
244The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,050.00
1909-S VDB XF.
Delightful, original surface quality and excellent detail make this an ideal representative of the traditional key date for any mid-grade Lincoln cent collection. The ear is a trifle soft, but strong...
245The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,200.00
1909-S VDB AU, cleaned.
Pinkish copper color and a lack of luster immediately suggest a cleaning, and closer examination reveals cloudy hairlines across each side. Nonetheless, considerable luster has survived the injustice,...
246The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,300.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-62 BN.
Faded olive-tan color deprives this cent of most of its original mint red, and plays a part in subduing the mint luster a bit. Still, the surfaces seem to be entirely unmarked, though a greenish...
247The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,400.00
1909-S VDB. ANACS photo-certified MS-63.

248The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,950.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63 RB.
About 95% of the original mint red remains on this key date Lincoln cent, and normally, that should qualify for a "RD" designation. This is a lovely coin, with tan flecks integrated well into the...
249The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,425.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-63 BN.
Tinges of faded mint red adhere to the edge of the President's portrait, and flicker in isolated spots across the reverse, but there is no question that this key date cent is almost entirely brown....
250The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,550.00
1909-S VDB. MS-63 RD, dipped.
Deceptive flickering orange color intermingles with yellowish gold that produces a nearly original appearance, and combined with brilliant mint luster, this key date 1909-S VDB has all the appearance...
253The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,525.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64 RB.
Areas of mint orange subtly yield to persimmon-red highlights, especially in the widest field areas. A premium quality coin that is free of carbon spots and offensive handling marks.
254The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$3,700.00
1909-S VDB. PCGS MS-64.
Fantastic, original mint red color seems to have faded hardly at all since the minute this inaugural issue was produced, and the excellent strike provides a strong date and mint mark. The obverse is...
450The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$675.00
1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, ANACS VG-08
Perfectly graded example in the newest ANACS holder. The VDB on the reverse is extremely bold, and some areas of the wheat stalks display obvious wheat line separation.

1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, PCGS VG-10
Fine details are plainly evident, especially on the wheat stalks where each wheat line is fully separated and defined. However, three gashes on Lincoln's portrait were carefully and properly...

281The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,100.00
1909-S VDB. MS-60 Details, Wiped RB.
