Lot Title:
1773 Virginia Halfpenny With Period After Georgivs, Seven Harp Strings, Rarity-4. NGC MS-63 BN.
Description:
An issue that could be probably attributed to the renown Cohen hoard, which contained more than 2,500 pieces, and was procured between 1780 and 1803 by Jacob and Israel Cohen. Subsequently, the majority of these were sold in 1929 by the descendants of Col. Mendes I. Cohen, Israel's son. Initially, after their arrival in America in 1773, they were kept in Richmond during the American Revolution by the Colonial Treasurer of Virginia, Robert Carter Nicholas, whose signature appears on colonial Virginia paper currency. To paraphrase Walter Breen, this issue holds an unequaled position in American Colonial coinage. These were the only coppers struck under British Royal Patent for the sole colony to be granted legal coinage by its charter. It was the only coinage whose distribution into commercial channels was essentially thwarted by the American Revolution, and it is the only colonial issue from which the typical collector has an opportunity to acquire an uncirculated example. The present lot presents this chance to a lucky bidder. It has gorgeous mahogany surfaces with just a trifle number of ticks and specks on an exemplary strike.
