Lot Title:
1859-D gold dollar AU-50
Description:
A relatively mild cleaning probably bars this coin from certification, but the overall appearance is certainly not bad, not by a long shot. There isn't much luster remaining, but this coin was likely slightly prooflike from the beginning, and therefore would not be expected to produce much cartwheel effect, especially considering that it was struck at Dahlonega. Characteristic of the issue, the reverse shows a filled "O" in the denomination, and the "5" in the date is blurred; a multitude of die polish lines show that the reverse die was heavily processed before being put into use. 1859-D is probably the most available 'Type 3" gold dollar from that mint, according to Garrett and Guth, but "availability" in this sense is relative, and not to be confused with "common"!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1859-D is not altogether rare despite a small mintage under five-thousand pieces, but it is a type-3 gold dollar, and it is a Dahlonega coin - both desirable characteristics for the gold dollar... |
