1855-O gold dollar, net EF-40 1855-O gold dollar, net EF-40
Lot Title: 1855-O gold dollar, net EF-40
Description: Any of the mint marked "Type 2" gold dollars is scarcer than the common Philadelphia coins of 1854 and 1855, but the 1855-O is the most obtainable between the Charlotte, Dahlonega, San Francisco and New Orleans coins struck in 1855 and 1856. The present example is not entirely problem free, as we note numerous wispy hairlines across the obverse, and somewhat thicker hairlines throughout much of the reverse, but these deficiencies are readily visible only under magnification. In fact, the obverse actually faces up as a decent coin at normal viewing distance, and glossy effects from the cleaning are mild at worst.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

991The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,850.00
1855-O XF.
Strictly original khaki-gold patina still presents a substantial portion of the mint luster to full appreciation, with only a little cartwheel effect lost to circulation. Type-2 gold dollars are a...
723The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$2,900.00
1855-O NGC AU-58.
Though a trifle pale and rather extensively abraded, substantial luster remains present across each side of this difficult type-2 gold dollar. "8" in the date is diagnostically weak.
924The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$2,400.00
1855-O NGC AU-55.
Consistent tan-gold color rests atop average struck detail. A ding in the upper right reverse field has slightly distorted the planchet, and was probably the singular grade determining factor.
985The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$2,100.00
1855-O NGC AU-55.
This is the only Type II Gold Dollar design that was issued by the New Orleans Branch Mint, having a low mintage of only 55,000. Possibly a late state of the reverse die, as there appears to be faint...
