(About The Images)
Twenty 1880-S Morgan dollars, all UNC. Twenty 1880-S Morgan dollars, all UNC.
Lot Title: Twenty 1880-S Morgan dollars, all UNC.
Description: Beach and Land Collection. Collector appeal: "A". One scarcely needs to read the date to guess that these are 1879-S, 1880-S, or 1881-S dollars as they have that amazing gemmy look that those are famous for, but these happen to be all 1880-S, filling a single plastic tube. A couple feature tantalizing rim tone, but most would be considered screaming blast-white. These should fall within MS-63 to Ms-65 in terms of grades, making them fabulous coins, fabulous quality, fabulous date! (PCGS# 007118)

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

823The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$925.00
Toned 1880-S MS-65, 1881-S MS-66, and 1888 MS-66, all PCGS
Clem Stevens Collection. The obverse of the 1880-S clearly depicts prooflike character in spite of some near-spectacular bag toning swishing down Liberty's profile. 1881-S features a mere hint of...
824The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$825.00
1880-S MS-65, 1881-S NGC MS-66, and a 1903-O NGC MS-64.
JRC Set. Magenta-tin patina drapes 1880-S, and the obverse has such lovely sparkling semi-prooflike appeal that one wonders why NGC didn't offer a "star". 1881-S displays haunting smoke-blue haze...
825The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$325.00
1880-S and 1887, both NGC MS-65 (no line).
Both display the typical rim tone that most collectors suspect was caused by the label insert, although 1880-S displays stronger, wider bands of color than does 1887. 1880-S has that always-amazing...
826The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$450.00
1880-S PCGS MS-66 (green label), and an 1885-O PCGS MS-66.
Checkered Collection. A smidgeon of mulberry toning sneaks into the space beneath the eagle's head for the 1880-S, but the general appearance obviously calls for "blast white" accolades. Exceptional...
827The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$240.00
1880-S PCGS MS-66.
JRC Set. Semi-prooflike on the obverse, as is often the case for the years of premier San Francisco dollar production, while the reverse displays a touch of brilliant cameo effect as well. Precise...
828The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$550.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
MS-67 should represent something really special in the silver dollar series, and such is the case here. Both sides exhibit tremendous, sparkling white luster and more than a hint of prooflike cameo...
769The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,300.00
Twenty BU 1880-S.
The Six-Oh-One Consignment. "A quality." Judging by their edge character, these match up rather well, and most face up as blazing, brilliant white dollars with choice to gem eye-appeal. Some coins...
770The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$625.00
1880-S NGC MS-65 DPL.
Bradford Pear Collection. Just one look, that's all it took to affirm the dead-eye impersonation of a proof silver dollar. A thick pile of mint frost layers the portrait and stands up high atop...
771The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$350.00
1880-S NGC MS-66 Star CAC.
NGC's star undoubtedly references borderline prooflike character, apparent on both sides. Memorably preserved, with glistening silvery luster that yields to border toning, especially some lovely...
864The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$370.00
1880-S ANACS MS-63 DMPL, 1883-CC ANACS MS-64, and an 1885 ANACS MS-64.
Some swizzling luster roams about the mirrored fields of the 1880-S, though haziness deadens the reflectivity a bit. A flashing, vivid arc of tone affects the upper rim of both sides. 1883-CC...
865The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$175.00
1880-S NGC MS-65 Star.
Flip-toned such that both sides feature a broad, blazing crescent of rainbow brilliance along the left side, there's no question whatsoever as to what led to NGC's distinguished "star" designation. ...
866The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$310.00
1880-S NGC MS-65 star, and a second 1880-S ANACS MS-65 PL.
1880-S has a deserved reputation as one of the best produced of all issues in the series, and these do not disappoint. The NGC MS-65 "star" comes perilously close to full prooflike quality, and shows...
867The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$725.00
1880-S, 1882-S, and an 1885, all NGC MS-66.
1880-S and 1882-S are cut from the same cloth, as they appear utterly identical except for a smidgeon better definition for the former coin. Both are ultra-frosty white. The 1885 also shows an...
868The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,450.00
1880-S, 1883, and 1884-CC, all PCGS MS-66 (green label).
A trio of very-gem dollars, all feature the superior quality usually expected of coins certified during this more conservative era in PCGS history. Further, all three benefit from absolutely...
970The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$500.00
1880-S PCGS MS-65 (green label), and an 1884-CC PCGS MS-65.
1880-S shows off sublimely attractive shimmering white luster and no distractions, along with the usual semi-prooflike eye-appeal. 1884-CC features great cotton-white brilliance and tremendous...
971The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$675.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
Staggering eye-appeal is even nicer than implied by the lofty MS-67 grade, because both sides develop nearly full prooflike character that should have received "star" consideration at NGC. Flaring...
708The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$330.00
1880-S NGC MS-66 STAR CAC.
Fully prooflike on the obverse, this coins also features a touch of toning around the edges of both sides, though utterly without detriment to the marvelous luster. The fields also display strong die...
709The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$625.00
1880-S PCGS MS-67.
Devastating eye-appeal only benefits from semi-prooflike surfaces that display hardly the scantiest of distraction. Liberty's cheek and neck are virtually unblemished, and the fields exhibit...
647The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,400.00
Forty 1880-S and twenty 1881-S Morgan dollars.
1880-S features quite a number of examples with tantalizing prooflike tendencies, and at least one coin is very nicely toned, as if from the end of a roll. These average at least half a point better...
663The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$850.00
Three 1880-S and four 1881-S, all PCGS MS-65 (green label).
PCGS green-label holders all show an identical MS-65 grade, but some upside potential lurks. One 1880-S has unexpected sprigs of dark and mildly distracting tone, but also displays strong prooflike...
667The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$675.00
Two 1880-S and four 1881-S, all PCGS MS-65 (rattler).
A single 1880-S displays blotchy tan toning on the obverse in somewhat distracting manner, while its reverse and the balance of the coins are mostly white. The other 1880-S has a lovely but very thin...
688The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$925.00
1880-S PCGS MS-67+.
Perfection can hardly be more than a breath away, as Liberty's cheek is utterly snow white and completely free from even the smallest visible tick without visual aid. With corresponding quality, all...
842The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,000.00
Twenty uncirculated 1880-S Morgan dollars.
Twenty flashy examples that mostly fall within the MS-63 to MS-64 grade range. Fully original coins (jbw).
843The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$450.00
1880-S, 1881-S, and 1882-S PCGS MS-65 (green label).
From the premier era of San Francisco dollars, these all resonate with the booming, silvery luster that the dates of 1880-S, 1881-S, and 1882-S are known for. Aside from a thread of gold splashed...
844The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$825.00
Three 1880-S. NGC MS-65 Star, NGC MS-66+, and NGC MS-66 Star.
Two of these possess NGC's "star" designation, and it is blatantly obvious that fully prooflike obverses garnered the accolades for exceptional eye-appeal. One is graded MS-65, and the other MS-66,...
845The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,075.00
Three 1880-S. NGC MS-66 CAC and two NGC MS-66+.
A "grade" may not be enough these days for common-date Morgan dollars. We need stickers, stars, and pluses! For those of you who simply cannot resist grade modification, here is your lot, a group of...
846The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$725.00
1880-S NGC MS-66 CAC and 1881-S NGC MS-66.
Both of these are borderline semi-prooflike silver dollars, which is no surprise given the dates. 1880-S displays an almost insanely sharp strike and insistent cameo appeal, while the 1881-S is not...
644The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$450.00
1880-S ANACS MS-64 DMPL.
Sheer supply of numbers in MS-64 and higher grades for 1880-S practically assures a fair population of DMPL examples such as this. Mirrors are amazingly deep, and beautifully accented by rim tone...
645The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$3,600.00
1880-S NGC MS-67 DPL.
It is always difficult to read reflectivity for a prooflike coin in a slab, but one hardly even needs to know how deep the mirrors are to immediately recognize that this is a black-and-white dollar. ...
576The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$625.00
1880-S PCGS MS-65 DMPL and Rainbow 1881-S PCGS MS-66.
Mesmerizing color blazes off each of these Morgan dollars, each certified by PCGS. 1880-S is graded MS-65 DMPL and is half way there to being a "black beauty". The obverse is thoroughly drenched in...
570The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$550.00
1880-S NGC MS-65 DPL.
Maximum cameo contrast leads to an arresting appearance for this common, yet uncommonly attractive, 1880-S dollar. Mirrors on both sides are equally deep, and the obverse benefits from fields that...
571The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,000.00
1880-S PCGS MS-66.
A stunning array of color dominates the obverse, while the reverse retains a virtually untoned appearance, and the subtle folds and intertwining pattern of shifting colors strongly suggest that this...
572The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$525.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
Ivory-white and immensely attractive, as can be predicted for a well produced Morgan dollar graded MS-67. A pair of short thin bagmarks next to the eagle's right (observed) wing provide the grade...
573The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,000.00
Toned 1880-S and 1881-S NGC MS-67.
1880-S and 1881-S are two dates in the Morgan dollar series that will never elicit delusions of great rarity, but to their credit, each of these examples is graded MS-67 by NGC and provides an...
574The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$750.00
1880-S NGC MS-67 Star.
The reason for the star being included in the grade? It's the prooflike obverse showing a stunning cameo relief. The reason for the high grade of MS-67? An almost total lack of surface flaws.
915The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$210.00
1880-S and 1902-O PCGS.
PCGS has certified both Morgan dollars in this lot. The first is an 1880-S in a green label holder, and it is graded MS-65, with delightful mint frost and a premium appearance. The second is a...
916The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$475.00
1880-S and 1881-O GSA MS-63.
It is highly unusual to find a single non-CC GSA dollar, but two in a single lot? Yet here they are, an 1880-S and an 1881-O, just as encapsulated by the government in the 1970s. No grades are...
917The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$290.00
1880-S and 1881-S PCGS MS-65PL.
Morgan dollars dated 1880-S and 1881-S are each graded MS-65 PL in PCGS green label holders. Both are gleaming white coins.
918The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$270.00
1880-S NGC MS-66 PL.
Executing a fine imitation of a proof Morgan dollar is this 1880-S, graded MS-66 PL by NGC. The obverse is essentially untoned, though the lower right reverse provides evidence of a fingerprint...
919The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$300.00
1880-S NGC MS-66 PL.
An 1880-S Morgan dollar graded MS-66 PL by NGC.
920The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$550.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
An unlimited supply of mint frost means the fields entirely lack reflectivity, yet this amazing superb gem features an intriguing cameo appearance apparently due to a difference in frothy texture...
749The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$360.00
Three 1880-S. NGC.
NGC judiciously applied a "star" designation to each of these 1880-S Morgan dollars, unquestionably because of the blazing prooflike obverse displayed by each coin. One is grade MS-64 "star", two are...
750The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$390.00
1880-S, 1884-O and 1888 NGC.
A trio of common Morgan dollars comprises this lot. They are enumerated as follows: 1880-S (NGC MS-66), 1884-O (NGC MS-63), and 1888 (NGC MS-65). The 1884-O is conservatively graded, while the 1888...
751The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$120.00
1880-S NGC MS-65.
An amazingly sharp strike has rendered about every possible detail, and the silvery brilliance is touched only very briefly by a couple of toned areas on either side of the date. A bagmark beneath...
752The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$525.00
Two 1880-S NGC MS-66*.
The NGC MS-66 "star" graded 1880-S Morgan dollars in this lot are practically identical twins. Each features an obverse that is at least PL if not DMPL, though the reverses are typically lustrous. ...
753The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$550.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
Though not "prooflike" in the traditional sense of mirrors and cameo motifs, there is obvious contrast between the frost laden devices and the satiny fields. Liberty's cheek is pristine, and for that...
613The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$650.00
1880-S and 1898-S Morgan dollars, PCGS MS-64.
Some interesting repunching of the date can be seen on the 1880-S that makes up half this lot. The other coin, an 1898-S, appears to have a repunched mint mark, as the serifs are doubled. Both of...
614The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$485.00
Three 1880-S NGC MS-65*.
It is not difficult to figure out what earned each 1880-S Morgan dollar in this lot the coveted "star" for eye appeal from NGC. Two of the coins are gleaming white with prooflike obverses (and one...
615The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$400.00
1880-S NGC MS-66*.
NGC's "star" designation is judiciously applied by that company to coins with exceptional eye appeal, and the spectacular 1880-S Morgan dollar offered here must have been a hands-down no-doubt shoe-in...
616The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$340.00
1880-S PCGS MS-66.
An 1880-S Morgan dollar graded MS-66 by PCGS.
617The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$550.00
1880-S and 1881-S NGC MS-66.
NGC has sensibly applied the MS-66 grade to both of these common yet attractive Morgan dollars. The 1880-S lacks any toning and gleams with silvery brilliance, while the 1881-S bears a tan-gold aspect...
618The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,250.00
Two 1880-S NGC MS-67.
Subtle difference in appearance, despite the identical MS-67 grade assigned each of these 1880-S Morgans, derives from the fact that one coin is semi-prooflike, and it is easy to think that NGC may...
619The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,700.00
1880-S NGC MS-68*.
The obverse is a dead ringer for a proof coin, and the pinpoint strike and pure snow-white DMPL quality culminated in a coveted "star" designation by NGC, an honor aspired to by only twenty-seven...
656The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$340.00
1880-S and nine additional PCGS certified MS-63 Morgan dollars
Each of the Morgan dollars in this lot is certified in an old PCGS "rattler" holder, with dates as follows: 1880-S, 1881-S, (3) 1884-O, 1885-O, (3) 1898-O, and 1904-O. Ten coin lot from the "River's...
657The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$500.00
1880-S and eleven additional different PCGS certified Morgan dollars...
A dozen different Morgan dollars constitute this lot, and each is housed in an old PCGS "rattler" slab. Dates included are: 1880-S (MS-63), 1881-S (MS-64), 1882-S (MS-64), 1883-O (MS-64), 1884-O...
658The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$190.00
1880-S and three additional PCGS MS-63 PL Morgan dollars
1880-S, 1881-S, 1887, and 1904-O. None of the four dates offered in this lot is considered rare in choice grades. On the contrary, population reports suggest that they are all among the most common...
659The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$390.00
1880-S (lot of 9) PCGS MS-64 Morgan dollars
All of the Morgan dollars in this lot are 1880-S examples grading MS-64. A couple seem to be obvious candidates for the "prooflike" designation. Nine coin lot.
731The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$675.00
1880-S PCGS MS-67.
Although no Proof Morgan dollars were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1880, one might easily imagine that this is just how such a coin would have looked. Sensational eye appeal beckons from both...
723The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$290.00
1880-S MS-65 NGC, 1882-S MS-65 NGC, and 1897-S MS-64 NGC.
Here is a trio of exemplary San Francisco branch mint cartwheels. Each coin is highly lustrous and frosty in appearance, and each is definitively struck and only lightly bagmarked, as befits its...
770The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$370.00
1880-S NGC MS-65*.
The toning on the reverse is so beautiful that NGC decided to display this side on the front of the holder and award a "star" as part of the grade. Very flashy.
771The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$200.00
1880-S PCGS MS-65 PL.
A superbly mirrored representative that is just a breath away from a DMPL designation. Its intensely white motifs are offset by its acute reflective fields. Only a meager number of ticks, and a few...
629The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$310.00
1880-S NGC MS-65 Star.
The reverse of this coin is so pretty they had to put it on the front side of the NGC holder. Majestic hues of violet, magenta, orange, green, blue, and russet are covering 50% of the reverse. The...
630The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$110.00
1880-S ANACS MS-65.
As flashy as they get with an obverse that is somewhat reflective. Violet-russet toning can be found around portions of the peripheries on both sides.
631The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$370.00
1880-S PCGS MS-66.
Let's just make a short little list of all the cool things this coin has: A. Rainbow Toning B. PCGS Holder C. Super Duper High Grade D. Monster Strike E. Rolling Luster F. Minimal Marks G. Well...
804The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$350.00
Four 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollars. NGC.
A glistening quartet of this somewhat prevalent issue. Two are graded MS-64, and the other two MS-65.
805The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$320.00
Two 1880-S. MS-65.
One is graded MS-65PL by PCGS, and the other is graded MS-65 by NGC. The PCGS example shows reflective surfaces and an extremely frosty, cameolike relief. The NGC example is also quite reflective,...
806The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$190.00
1880-S NGC MS-65*.
Crescent moon rainbow tones adorn both the obverse and reverse of this spectacular dollar. Hues of orange, red, blue, goldenrod, magenta, and green can be observed. The fields are fully lustrous,...
807The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,400.00
Three 1880-S NGC MS-66.
A marvelous threesome of a run-of-the-mill date. One has a delightful blush of lavender on the obverse with an imposing sparkling radiance on its reverse. The other two in this grouping portray...

809The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$825.00
1880-S NGC MS-67.
This is a spectacular specimen of an otherwise routinely encountered issue. It displays sensational frosty motifs that are complemented by virtually pristine surfaces. Just a trace of golden toning...
734The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$30.00
1880-S MS-64 PL.
This is a highly reflective dollar with frosty white devices. There are few marks and no distractions. This dollar is blast white with only a bit of golden toning on the denticles.
735The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$180.00
1880-S SEGS MS-65 DMPL.
This is a super flashy coin that is well deserving of the grade. The devices are frosty white and sharp. The fields are relatively clean and highly reflective. The obverse has a breath of golden...
736The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$170.00
1880-S PCGS MS-65.
Frosted devices are offset by semi-prooflike fields. Ticks and scuffs congruent with the assigned grade are seen on this boldly struck San Francisco specimen.
737The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$230.00
