(About The Images)
1885-S PCGS MS-65. 1885-S PCGS MS-65.
Lot Title: 1885-S PCGS MS-65.
Description: Clem Stevens Collection. Sensational luster exemplifies one of the classic characteristics for 1885-S, as long, shimmering bands loop and race through the fields. 1885-S gets some accolades as a somewhat better date in the lower mint-state grades, but true gems are elusive, this being an extremely well struck example. Magenta-gold on the reverse sees some bluish tint toward the rims, while the reverse features delightful copper-bright patina. (PCGS# 007164)

1885-S and 1900-S, both PCGS MS-63.
Checkered Collection. 1885-S benefits from the lovely production quality of San Francisco dollars of the era, with long, swooping curves of pure white luster zooming through the fields. 1900-S is no...
902The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$525.00
1885-S NGC MS-64.
Value triples for 1885-S in MS-65, making a superior MS-64 very attractive to the savvy purchaser. And let there be no question -- this one is gorgeous, featuring strong prooflike tendencies for the...
903The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,600.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65.
A more difficult piece in grades of MS-60 or better, 1885-S generally follows the prior half-dozen years in terms of "San Francisco quality" in terms of attractive luster. This example, though, does...
995The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$370.00
1885-S NGC MS-60, 1887-S NGC MS-61, and 1889-S PCGS MS-62.
In date order, grades progress from MS-60 to 61 to 62 for this Morgan dollar trio. 1885-S features nicely dished luster but a lot of contact supports the claim for the basic mint-state grade. 1887-S...
763The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$600.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64 (green label).
After the run of common issues from 1878 through 1882, San Francisco produced a two-headed monster with 1883-S and 1884-S, two dates that are difficult enough to find in any grade above AU, and...
764The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,350.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65.
Dusky denim-grey patina layers gently over extremely potent silver-magenta luster, dictating a vibrant and thoroughly mesmerizing effect. There cannot be even a vestige of doubt about vintage...
705The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$550.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64.
Fabulous eye-appeal for the MS-64 grade level is established by a rich pattern of deep sunset-gold and lemon-beige toning around the obverse, with the reverse showing an abbreviated array of the same...
883The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,150.00
1885-S PCGS MS-63+ and 1890-O PCGS MS-64PL.
While only one is so designated, both of these Morgan dollars possess some prooflike attributes. 1885-S is graded MS-63+, and has significant reflectivity in the fields, though there isn't enough...
884The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$525.00
1885-S NGC MS-64.
Shimmering, iceberg-white mint frost dominates the entire coin, although the eagle on the reverse is particularly well textured, imparting token prooflike character to that side. This coin looks like...
885The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$0.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65. STP Legacy Collection.
Both sides are evenly frosted with fine luster and display very attractive sharpness. While the entire coin is essentially white, there is no evidence that it has been dipped, and the cartwheel...
667The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$525.00
1885/5-S (VAM-2) NGC MS-64.
While not fully struck above the ear, the appearance overall is nearly dazzling due to a semi-prooflike obverse and shimmering reverse luster. A pleasing, original and undipped silver coin, each side...
786The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,300.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65.
1885-S is quite tough to find at the gem level, and overall is a "second level" coin in the Morgan dollar series, commanding a modest premium over common coins in nearly any grade. Peach-gold...
607The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$500.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64.
The obverse is atypically the stronger side of this 1885-S, which means the overall appearance will actually seem a little nicer than the MS-64 grade to most observers, since they predictably tend to...
965The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$475.00
1885-S NGC MS-64.
Glistening eye appeal is bolstered by an exceptional strike and a somewhat semi-prooflike obverse, while both sides remain entirely untoned. Trivial marks only account for the grade, including a...
966The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,350.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65.
Pristine, shimmering brilliance shines off this white dollar and shows off the exceedingly sharp details beautifully. Liberty's cheek is hardly blemished, and the fields are clean as a whistle.
776The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,200.00
1885-S (MS-63), 1899-S Vam-7 (MS-63), 1900-S (MS-63 PL) and 1903-O...

694The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$180.00
1885-S Morgan dollar, AU-58
Nearly mint state, with virtually full flow line luster and mild rub above the ear. Color enthusiasts may find themselves enchanted by the intermingled burgundy-gold and pastel-blue colors.
781The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,000.00
1885-S NGC MS-64, 1888 S NGC MS-63, and 1902-S NGC MS-62.
Patchy hairlines in the field area below Liberty’s chin affect the grade of the 1885-S. The 1888-S features some semi-prooflike characteristics that probably exaggerate slightly the scattering of...
782The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$390.00
1885-S MS-64.
This sparkling white specimen displays a few scuffs here and there, but Liberty's central cheek area is quite smooth. Unlike a large number of this date, which are softly struck, this example has...
783The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$675.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64.
Unlike most of this issue, the central devices on this specimen are quite prominent. The frosty motifs and brilliant fields project an excellent cartwheel aspect. Liberty's cheek is exceptionally...
808The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$390.00
1885-S and 1887-S. MS-63
This is a charming San Francisco duo. The 1885 date is an upper end example within this designated grade level. It glistens with a dazzling radiance, and golden nuances supplement its visual appeal....
809The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$425.00
1885-S NGC MS-64.
This blazing white dollar is dripping with luster and has minimal marks. There are a few ticks, but they are average for the grade.
810The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$800.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64 and 1886-S NGC MS-63.
The 1885-S is blazing white and full of luster while the 1886-S has mottled russet tones with hues of turquoise, orange, and violet.
782The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1885-S PCGS MS-64.
An exceptionally brilliant and sharply struck specimen. The satiny and lustrous surfaces radiate a splendid cartwheel aspect that diminishes any adverse effects the contact marks might present.
783The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1885-S PCGS MS-65.
A Premium Quality specimen of this San Francisco issue, and one that is not plagued with the usual unappealing contact marks on Liberty's cheek. This well-struck Dollar's satiny surfaces are lustrous...
