Lot Title:
1884-CC NGC MS-61.
Description:
A glowing honey gold example of a conditional rarity. PCGS and NGC have only graded a combined five examples this high. Just one PCGS example is graded higher, and I'd be willing to bet $20 that this example is as nice, or nicer, than that example. We covered the grade and asked two of our senior staff graders to evaluate this coin. Both said nearly the same thing. They said, "This coin is an MS-63, but it is probably in an MS-62 holder because of the date." When the MS-61 grade was revealed, one shook his head, and the other raised his brow in surprise. The flowing luster, detailed strike, and overall appeal of this coin makes me feel pretty confident that I would win the aforementioned wager. It's probably a long shot, but the Quarterly III may have to start listing a price in the MS-63 field for this date in its price listing.

Carson City Observance Day doesn't usually come around this early in the calendar year, but is celebrated in fine fashion by this trio of half-eagles. 1884-CC grades VF-35, with surfaces modestly... |
