Lot Title:
1838-D PCGS AU-50.
Description:
Classic Mustang Collection. One pair of dies produced all of the 1838-D half-eagles in existence, and collectors today have to thank production of 20,583 coins for the creation of one of the very few type coins that has an obverse mintmark. The Classic Head half-eagle is one of the most completable series of early U.S coins; curiously, one can probably complete the set for much less than a complete run of, for example, bust half-dollars. This coin features fairly clean surfaces, aside from a couple of short old scratches attached to Liberty's portrait. The reverse shows particularly well sculpted definition, though both sides feature considerable sharpness for AU-50. (PCGS# 008178)
