Lot Title:
1853 NGC MS-60.
Description:
With other coin denominations so common for 1853, the half-eagle usually has no place in numismatic consciousness as a better date, but initial production was only 305,770 pieces, and high-grade examples are scarce. MS-60 represents a meaningful entry-level for the date. Small abrasions frequent both sides of this example, diminishing the luster in the fields, though the obverse sparkles between the stars. The presence of a small, square die lump between "18" and some aberration in the left denticles beneath the date lead one to wonder about a possible misplaced digit, but there appears to be no literature regarding the possibility.
